Brighton Phoenix has announced the passing of former Great Britain athlete Robbie Fitzgibbon, aged 28. Fitzgibbon was a middle-distance runner who represented his country at various international events. His club described him as “one of our most cherished athletes”, who was “a friend to many, and a source of motivation for all who had the privilege of knowing him”. Fitzgibbon joined Brighton Phoenix as a junior and worked relentlessly to become a GB senior international. He competed in the senior indoor European Championships in 2019 and made appearances in several Diamond League races.
His coach and mentor, Joel Kidger, hailed Fitzgibbon as a talented and hardworking athlete. “He was gritty, determined, and usually got to where he wanted.” Fitzgibbon’s training partner, Charlie Grice, paid tribute on social media, saying, “You were a true fighter who always gave your best.” Fitzgibbon had been preparing to participate in the 2025 Brighton Marathon in support of the charity Mind. His father, Robin, will take part in his stead.
Brighton Phoenix’s statement on Fitzgibbon’s death called him the embodiment of a runner’s runner and emphasized the core values he represented.
