A young footballer who lost both of his lower legs after being involved in a car accident has shared how grateful he is to be alive. Adam Golebiewski was only 17 years old when the accident happened a few weeks ago in Aberdeenshire. The double amputation was necessary, and he celebrated his 18th birthday while still in rehabilitation in a hospital in Aberdeen.
Golebiewski, who is a goalkeeper, was known to have great potential in the sport and is a football enthusiast. He said, “Everyone has down days, but I’ll try to keep smiling. I am happy to be here”. The apprentice builder was in a car with friends when it crashed on 8 September. The crash left four teenagers injured, including Golebiewski, who had his legs amputated below the knee.
He is now undergoing intensive rehabilitation at Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen, and police inquiries into the crash in Macduff’s Union Road are ongoing. Golebiewski spoke about his journey to recovery during his rehabilitation with orthopaedic rehabilitation physiotherapist Owen Cairns. He does not remember the accident itself and said, “I remember waking up just before I was away to go into surgery. Somebody was beside my bed; she explained what happened, ‘I am sorry to say you were in a really bad accident and you will lose your legs”.
Despite going through a difficult and trying time, Golebiewski’s hopes remain “really positive” for the next stage of his life. His attitude has been an inspiration to his team, Deveronside, where he plays. Colin Legge, the team’s manager, described Golebiewski as an “inspirational” young man who had great goalkeeping potential.
