Kate makes first official public engagement since ending chemo

The Prince and Princess of Wales have made an official visit to Southport where they met with the families of three children who were killed in a knife attack earlier this year. Unexpectedly, the Princess joined her husband during the visit, making it Catherine’s first official public engagement since she completed her chemotherapy treatment. Sources suggested Catherine wanted to join Prince William to show her support and compassion for the local community. The couple met with emergency responders who helped at the scene of the attack before later spending time with the bereaved families.

The visit was intended as a low-key event, giving Prince William and Catherine the opportunity to spend time with the families of the children who had tragically lost their lives. Despite her chemotherapy treatment only recently coming to an end, Catherine has returned to work, attending meetings surrounding her early years campaign. Although her appearances may have to remain flexible, this marks the most significant moment in Catherine’s return to royal duties.

The visit to Southport demonstrated to the community that they had not been forgotten, and the couple heard about the efforts to bring the community together after the knife attack. Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar were killed in the children’s dance group on July 29, 2024, which also left ten others injured. Axel Rudakubana, seventeen, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.

During the visit, the royal couple spoke to emergency workers about the importance of taking care of their well-being and mental health. They also donated to a fundraiser which aimed to provide physical and psychological support for emergency services who were affected by the attack and subsequent riots. The Princess of Wales expressed her gratitude to emergency workers for supporting families during their darkest times and thanked them on behalf of the bereaved families for their efforts
