George Baldock, a former defender for Sheffield United and a Greece international, has died at the age of 31. His body was discovered in the swimming pool of his home in Glyfada, southern Athens. Although police attempted to revive him, he could not be saved. Baldock had signed for the Greek team Panathinaikos in the summer after seven years with Sheffield United, as well as having loan spells with Northampton and Oxford United. He had made four appearances for Panathinaikos, with his most recent being in their scoreless draw with Olympiakos.
The Greece national team said in a statement that Baldock’s death had caused them “profound sadness and sorrow”. The player had won 12 caps for the country, which he qualified to represent through his grandmother. Baldock had not been picked for the Nations League game against England on Thursday. The Greek squad has requested permission from UEFA to wear black armbands during the match and hold a minute’s silence in his honor before kick-off.
Baldock’s family released a statement saying they were “in shock at this terrible loss”. Panathinaikos also issued a statement, saying they “were shocked by the loss of our George”. Sheffield United extended the “sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United” to Baldock’s family and friends. Baldock’s footballing career began with MK Dons in 2009 and he had more than 100 appearances for them before joining Sheffield United in 2017.
The cause of Baldock’s death will be determined following an autopsy, though sources within the Greek police have suggested “there are no indications of foul play”. Baldock’s passing has caused widespread grief, with condolences coming in from across the sporting world. Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who started his career at Sheffield United, posted a photograph of Baldock on Twitter with a broken heart emoji and the message “RIP”
