The annual Pirate Fest in seaside town Weymouth, Dorset drew in hundreds of attendees from all over the country for its third year. The festival was filled with elaborate costumes, parade re-enactments, and live music performances by bands that played throughout the weekend at the Hardy Hophouse in St Thomas Street. The pirate community is described as a vast and wonderful, fun-loving community, where many travel from the length and breadth of the country. Joining The Dolmen on the line-up were Celtic Giants and The Shakespearos.
Although the festival has been in its current form since 2022, it was likely to have been sooner had it not been for the Covid pandemic, according to one of the organizers, Sem Vine. She mentioned that “The seed of Weymouth Pirate Fest was sown in the ’90s, but really began to take off when the band The Dolmen became involved, writing concept albums and making the live music and parade elements central to the event.” The three-day event is funded through the town’s Business Improvement District (BID) as well as private sponsorship.
Throughout the duration of the festival, there was a parade saw the town’s Millennium Square filled with people wearing elaborate costumes. The streets were also filled with individuals donning various pirate costumes. Several bands performed throughout the weekend, including the well-known Celtic Giants and The Shakespearos. Pirate Fest has become an annual tradition since its inception and draws in a wide array of individuals from all over the United Kingdom.
Despite beginning in the “90s, Weymouth Pirate Fest has only been around in its current manifestation since 2021. Nonetheless, it has always been an event highly anticipated by individuals in the pirate community. The festival is a testament to the community’s love of life and enjoyment of fun, as well as the town’s ability to organize successful events.
