Native groups and museums have criticized an auction house for putting human and ancestral remains up for sale, leading to the items being withdrawn from the sale. The Swan auction house in Oxfordshire had been listing objects including shrunken heads, skulls, and other remains, which originated from communities around the world. The Director of the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, Laura Van Broekhoven, has called the sale “ethically really problematic” and praised the decision to remove the remains from the auction.
The artefacts were taken in the 19th and 20th centuries and their proposed sale in 2024 has provoked outrage from many communities worldwide. Ms Van Broekhoven said “the fact that they were being put on sale is really disrespectful and inconsiderate”. The sale included shrunken heads from the Jivaro people of South America, skulls from the Ekoi people of West Africa, and a 19th-century horned human skull from the Naga people of India and Myanmar.
