Newspaper headlines: 'Russia is plotting mayhem' and 'Wagatha Thrifty'


Several newspapers featured MI5’s warning about the Russian intelligence service’s ongoing efforts to cause chaos in Britain. The Financial Times reported that spying by foreign powers against the UK has surged by nearly half. The MI5’s Director-General, Ken McCallum, stated that Russian espionage is on a “sustained mission to generate mayhem” across the country. The I newspaper revealed the agency’s concern that the escalating conflict in the Middle East could result in an Iranian attack on British soil. 

According to the Daily Mail’s headline, McCallum’s annual update was “chilling.” The lead story highlighted that minors’ consumption and poisoning by online extremism generated a “staggering terror threat from radicalized teens” in the UK. The Daily Express also headlined the report warning that MI5 has “a lot of work on its plate” to manage these issues and protect the UK.

The Times highlighted that the UK population rose in the middle of last year to reach 68.2 million, despite the number of deaths outweighing the births. The data from the Office for National Statistics disclosed that “record growth” resulting wholly from net migration has surged for the past 53 years. It is expected to exert renewed pressure on the UK government regarding immigration management.
