A rail company is reportedly threatening to take a man who bought the incorrect train ticket to court, even though he admitted his mistake and offered to purchase the correct fare or pay a fine. Sam Williamson, a 22-year old from Glossop bought an invalid £3.65 ticket from Broadbottom to Manchester. He had used his 16-25 railcard to purchase the ticket, but later learned that it was not valid for the time he was travelling. Williamson, a university graduate, stated that he was worried he would receive an extensive fine and get a criminal record for his error.
Northern, the rail firm with whom Williamson travelled, said that it is their customers’ responsibility to buy a valid ticket before boarding a train. A spokesperson from the company added that 96% of customers abide by this policy. Although he admitted his fault, and was happy to pay the necessary amount, Williamson was told that he couldn’t purchase a new ticket or pay a penalty at the time and instead received a “travel incident report”.
Williamson stated that he had used his railcard on similar journeys to the one in question before without running into difficulty and had not realised that it could not be used until after 10:00am. The railcard changes restrictions depending on travelling times. Northern has requested that Williamson explains what occurs in writing within 14 days, and noted that legal proceedings could follow.
Williamson purchased the cheapest anytime single ticket he could find using his 16-25 railcard for 10:29 BST on Thursday but claims that it was not clear when he bought the ticket on the Northern app what the restrictions were. In a post on social media, Williamson called on Northern to be more transparent regarding when anytime tickets can and cannot be used in accordance with different railcards. National Rail has been contacting for comment regarding this matter
