An exhibition of portraits showcasing the lives of homeless people is set to take place in Kent. The Beyond The Margins exhibition features work by photographer and filmmaker Jason Knott, who spent a year with clients, volunteers, and staff of the Catching Lives charity in Canterbury. Knott’s work promises to provide an “insight into the lives of people experiencing homelessness”. It will be displayed from Friday, as part of the Canterbury Festival, for three weeks. The exhibition will be held at the Rock Paper Scissors shop in Canterbury until 2 November.
Jason Knott said he was grateful to be given an opportunity to engage with people on such a personal level, and to hear about their individual journeys that led them to homelessness. Knott said he was “slowly let into their worlds”. Trust was a big issue, so when he started to see them relax, smile, and hold eye contact with him, Knott realized the magnitude of the moment. “The whole subject got under my skin,” he added.
Miriam Ellis, the arts and activity coordinator at Catching Lives, commended Jason Knott’s sensitive approach, which she said had “produced a series of compelling images that illustrate the lives of those who use our services and the volunteers who support us”. The exhibition signals a significant moment in the charity’s mission to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness.
The exhibition offers a chance for the public to see a different side of people who are often marginalized and ignored. The Canterbury Festival has played a vital role in promoting arts and culture, and its involvement in Beyond The Margins signals the festival’s dedication to showcasing important issues in the community
