The mother of Emily Damari, the only remaining British-Israeli hostage held by Hamas in Gaza, has spoken out about her frustration with the lack of effort being made to secure her daughter’s release. Emily was abducted from an Israeli kibbutz over a year ago and is one of 97 hostages who remains unaccounted for. Mandy Damari, Emily’s mother, spoke about Emily’s prolonged captivity at a memorial event commemorating the attacks that took place a year ago. She said, “Why isn’t the whole world, especially Britain, fighting every moment to secure her release? She’s one of their own.” She also urged other countries to do more to secure the release of her daughter and the other hostages, stressing that every moment is another moment of unimaginable suffering or even death.
Emily was born to her British mother in Israel and had lived there before being taken hostage. Her mother described how her daughter is being held in captivity 20 meters or more underground in the Gaza terror tunnels. Reports shared by some women and children who were released in a hostage deal in November indicate that Emily is still alive but that she remains in extreme danger along with many other hostages. Damari spoke about her daughter’s spirit and coping skills, which were critical to helping the other hostages stay positive and hopeful during their captivity.
The event where Mandy Damari spoke was organized by the Board of Deputies of British Jews and other groups and was attended by thousands of British Jews and supporters of Israel. Among the crowd, many of whom have family and friends in Israel, there was disbelief that the hostages still had not been freed. Israeli ambassador to the UK Tzipi Hotovely promised that her government would do everything in its power to bring the hostages home. Michael Wegier, chief executive of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, identified a deep sense of trauma among the British Jewish community, especially those with links to Israel.
Sir Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, has expressed his unequivocal support for the Jewish community and called for the hostages’ immediate release. He has also reiterating the urgent need for ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon. Susanna Terstal, the EU ambassador to the UN, has also called for the immediate release of all the hostages, describing their captivity as a violation of international law. Emily is one of four hostages with British relatives still held by Hamas; others include Eli Sharabi, Oded Lifschitz, and Avinatan Or. Nadav Popplewell, another British-Israeli, was kidnapped on the same day as Emily, and his body was recovered by Israeli soldiers in Gaza in August
