Reform UK has threatened legal action against two unnamed men if they are not charged by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) over an incident at Manchester Airport. Footage of the disturbance showed a Greater Manchester Police officer appearing to kick and stamp on a man who was being restrained. Additional footage from the preceding week was later obtained by the Manchester Evening News. The CPS confirmed that it is considering material and providing legal advice relating to a series of alleged criminal offences at the airport.
At a press conference, party leader Nigel Farage accused GMP and the CPS of contributing to “two-tier policing” by failing to announce charges following the disturbance. The Home Office denied that this was the case, stating that the CPS and the Independent Office for Police Conduct were capable of performing independent investigations. The average length of time taken by the CPS to reach a charging decision following referral by police is 46 days, according to the most recent data available.
Reform MP Richard Tice added that by not releasing additional footage, police had allowed misinformation to be circulated. However, GMP stated that it had not released any footage of the incident and was avoiding commentary on the case to ensure “that justice can be served without the risk of prejudicing proceedings”. Four men arrested on suspicion of assault and affray in connection with the incident remain on bail.
The IOPC and GMP are investigating the events. One officer is under investigation in connection with the original incident as well as being suspended by the force. A second officer has been informed of an investigation after the arrest of two other men. A solicitor representing the brothers, Fahir Amaaz and Muhammed Amaad, said they were “awaiting the outcome of the CPS investigation” and doubted that the party’s accusations would have any influence on legal proceedings. Reform UK has legal representation ready to progress with a private prosecution if necessary
