The inquest into the deaths of 62 patients treated by breast surgeon Ian Paterson is set to begin in Birmingham. One such case involves Catherine Coyne, who died at home in 2008 at the age of 51, four years after developing secondary cancer. Her husband, Stuart Coyne, said questions emerged after her death regarding a “cleavage-sparing” procedure that wasn’t recognised by authorities. It left breast tissue behind, and neither of them realised that she had not had a proper mastectomy. Reports began questioning whether the procedure was correct for patients after Mrs Coyne died. Paterson, who is serving a 20-year jail sentence after being convicted of 17 counts of wounding with intent, is to ask for the inquest to be adjourned.
More than 50 preliminary inquiries were held last year, with the inquest expected to last two years in total. There have been eight cases added to the list since last month, with more being examined in hearings held at Birmingham and Solihull Coroner’s Court. The inquests are being held without a jury. The complexity, scale, and time commitment involved prompted the appointment of Judge Richard Foster as the coroner carrying out investigations. The coroner said last September that he expected more than 20 further inquests to be opened.
Paterson’s victims’ families have criticised the decision to move him to an open prison. A petition has been started, and Saqib Bhatti, MP for Meriden and Solihull East, has written to the justice secretary asking her to review and reverse the decision.
