One year on from Hamas’s attack on Israel, Foreign Secretary David Lammy has delivered a speech commemorating the victims. At a memorial event held at South Tottenham Synagogue, Lammy spoke of the pain being felt in the Jewish community, referring to 7 October 2021 as “the worst attack on the Jewish community since the Holocaust”. Lammy also expressed his concern for the hostages that are still held in Gaza, including Emily Damari, a British-Israeli who was taken captive along with 250 others by Hamas in last year’s attack. Damari is the only British-Israeli still in captivity and neither she nor her family have any information regarding her fate.
97 hostages remain unaccounted for following Hamas’s attack last year. In response, Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza that has resulted in the deaths of thousands. Lammy’s speech highlighted the pain being felt by the Jewish community, both in the UK and across the diaspora.
Also speaking at the recent memorial event, Damari’s mother, Mandy, criticized the lack of action taken by countries including the UK, calling for more to be done to help free her daughter and the other hostages. She described it as a “living hell” not knowing what her daughter is going through. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has also rallied to the cause, saying the country must stand unequivocally with the Jewish community and describing the attack of 7 October last year as the “darkest day in Jewish history since the Holocaust”.
Mandy Damari spoke of her daughter’s love for the UK, describing it as her “second home across the sea”. She enjoyed watching football, going to the pub and shopping at Primark. Meanwhile, speaking of the pain he felt when meeting the families of the victims, Sir Keir referred to the shared pain being felt throughout the UK, describing their grief as “ours”.
The one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel has led to an outpouring of grief and calls for action. The plight of hostages still being held in Gaza has also come to the fore, with families demanding that more be done to secure their release
