For the first time in its 20-year history, Strictly Come Dancing showcased a traditional Bollywood song during the weekend’s episode. Punam Krishan, a Scottish Indian doctor, and her dance partner Gorka Márquez performed to Bole Chudiyan from the 2001 hit film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Krishan expressed her pride in bringing her culture and heritage to the forefront of the show, saying that representation matters, especially for South Asians who want to feel included and see something different.
The judges commended the performance, with three of them awarding the couple with eight and one with nine. Craig Revel Horwood admitted that he was not an authority on Bollywood music but found the dance absolutely incredible, while Motsi Mabuse added that many people who were watching the show felt proud to see it.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was released in 2001 and starred some of Bollywood’s most significant names, including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Hrithik Roshan. Bole Chudiyan was remembered as the film’s signature sound and was voted the UK’s favourite noughties Bollywood tune last week.
Strictly Come Dancing has previously incorporated elements of Indian music, but this is the first time that a traditional Bollywood song was showcased from the start of the performance.
During the episode, JLS member JB Gill and dancer Amy Dowden performed the American smooth to Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka, while comedian Chris McCausland and Dianne Buswell jived to the Wayne’s World Theme. Nevertheless, Nick Knowles was unable to participate in the competition due to an injury he acquired during rehearsals. However, according to the competition’s rules, Knowles and Luba Mushtuk will have a bye until he can dance again
