A Lincolnshire woman has discovered why her application for a job as a motorcycle stunt rider was never answered – 48 years after it was sent. Tizi Hodson, 70, applied for the job in 1976 but the application was never delivered. However, she did not let that setback hamper her daredevil career as she found work that took her all over the world, including Africa, where she worked as a snake handler and horse whisperer.
Ms Hodson said she was amazed when she opened the post and found her original letter to the stunt riding company. The letter was found behind a drawer in a Staines post office. A note attached to the top of the letter read: “Late delivery by Staines Post Office. Found behind a draw [sic]. Only about 50 years late.”
Ms Hodson was surprised at how the letter had found its way back to her after she had moved house more than 50 times and even lived in different countries. She said, “How they found me…is a mystery. It means so much to me to get it back all this time later.” Speaking about her younger self, she said: “If I could speak to my younger self, I would tell her to go and do everything I’ve done. I’ve had such a wonderful time in life, even if I have broken a few bones.”
Ms Hodson also learned to fly and became an aerobatic pilot and flying instructor. Looking back at the letter she sent when she was just starting out she said: “I was very careful not to let people who were advertising for a stunt rider know that I was female, or I thought I would have had no chance of even getting an interview. It seems incredible to get the letter back after all this time.”
The silence following her application to the stunt riding company did not deter Ms Hodson from trying for other jobs. She went on to have a career filled with adventure, and it seems that she would not have changed anything, except perhaps to tell her younger self that it was unnecessary to be so cautious
