EasyJet has confirmed that a passenger boarded the wrong flight and caused a delay at Manchester Airport. It is understood that the man had been due to fly on another EasyJet service, but entered the Milan-bound plane on Friday night by mistake. Passengers were asked to disembark after the error was discovered and extra security checks were carried out. Greater Manchester Police said that the man had “embarked on a flight without the correct documentation”. He was arrested on suspicion of hiding himself with the purpose of “being carried in an aircraft without consent and intentionally or recklessly causing public nuisance”.
An EasyJet spokesperson stated that the flight was “subject to additional security checks, in line with procedures, due to a passenger incorrectly boarding the flight”. EasyJet said that no suspicious items were found on the plane and there was no indication of terrorism. The company said it would investigate the incident with its ground partner at Manchester Airport in an effort to understand how the man was able to board the flight. The spokesperson also noted that the company was “not able to provide further details while [the investigation] is ongoing”.
EasyJet has experienced a tough period recently, with the coronavirus pandemic having a major impact on the aviation industry. The company’s share price has fallen by around 45% this year. After first-half losses of £353m ($434m), further job losses and cutting costs are expected to be announced when the company’s full-year results are released in November. During this difficult period, EasyJet is likely to be keen to avoid any further negative publicity resulting from security breaches or delays.
Manchester Airport launched an investigation into an earlier security incident in August, after a man passed through the airport’s Terminal One security checkpoint without being screened. The man, who was later identified as Nadeem Muhammed, managed to board a Pakistan International Airlines flight that was due to fly from Manchester to Italy. He was discovered on the plane, arrested and later jailed for nine months
