The UK government is ramping up efforts to evacuate British nationals from Lebanon as it urges all people to leave amid growing conflict in the region. As of Friday morning, over 2,000 UK citizens had registered their presence in the country. More than 250 have already left on chartered flights organised by the government. The fourth such flight will depart on Sunday.
The Foreign Office cautions that the number of British nationals thought to be in Lebanon “should be treated with caution” since people do not have to register their presence. It added that many may be reluctant to leave due to strong ties to the country. The government has said that it is working to increase capacity on commercial flights for those wishing to leave. It has also sent 700 troops and government staff to Cyprus for “contingency planning”.
The conflict in Lebanon has been fueled by airstrikes from both Israel and Hezbollah militant group. The UK government has urged all British nationals, their spouses or partners, and children under the age of 18 to take the chartered flight on Sunday. The government assures that vulnerable people, such as those with medical needs, will be a priority. The situation in Lebanon will be kept under review.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has urged all British nationals in the country to come forward to be evacuated. Foreign Secretary David Lammy issued a statement saying that he was glad that “many people have heeded our advice to leave the country immediately”.
