The fourth instalment of the popular Bridget Jones franchise is set to release on Valentine’s Day 2025, but actor Hugh Grant has warned fans that the film will have a much different tone from its predecessors. The title of the film, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, is based on the latest novel from series author Helen Fielding, which follows Bridget in her 50s as a widowed mother of two. Grant, who will reprise his role as Daniel Cleaver in the film, has revealed that while the movie will still maintain its trademark humour, it will also be “very, very sad.”
Grant, who is known for his roles in romantic comedies such as Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, did not appear in the third film in the Bridget Jones series. He initially felt that there was no role for him in the fourth instalment either, but producers wanted to include him. Working with producers, Grant helped shape the character of Daniel, who he felt needed a third dimension due to his age. Grant said that the final script is “brilliant” and “moving”.
The production studio has not commented on how closely the new film will follow the storyline of the novel, but it has been revealed that author Helen Fielding wrote the script. Grant indicated on the Graham Norton show that Fielding used a real-life tragedy to develop the plotline of the film. Fielding had written a novel about a woman raising children by herself after the death of her husband, but soon realised the main character was “a bit like Bridget”. She then turned it into a Bridget Jones book.
Renée Zellweger is also set to reprise her role as the title character in the new film, which takes its title from the latest Bridget Jones novel. The films follow the life of Bridget Jones, a single working woman living in London. The first film adaptation was released in 2001, with Zellweger earning an Oscar nomination for her role. The sequel, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, was released in 2004 and starred Colin Firth as Mark Darcy.
New cast members for the fourth film include Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall, who is rumoured to play Bridget’s younger love interest. Emma Thompson, who debuted her character of Bridget’s despairing obstetrician in the third film, Bridget Jones’s Baby, is also set to return for the new film. Fielding has previously revealed that she wrote Mark Darcy out of the series because she did not want Bridget to become “a smug married”, a fate that Bridget feared in the earlier books
