A suspected acid attack on a schoolgirl outside a school in west London has resulted in a 35-year-old man being arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. The victim, 14-year-old Teagan McFarlane, suffered “potentially life-changing” injuries and required surgery following the attack. A 16-year-old boy and a staff member were also injured outside Westminster Academy, Westbourne Park, when the attack occurred. A second 14-year-old girl has been arrested in connection with the incident and bailed.
Following interrogation, the 35-year-old man, who is suspected of being the perpetrator of the attack, was released on bail while police continue their investigations. Detectives have appealed for anyone who may have dashcam footage of the incident to contact them, as they continue to search for evidence. It is believed that a lone man rode off on an electric scooter after throwing the substance at the teenagers.
Teagan McFarlane’s father has previously expressed the pain and distress felt by his daughter in the aftermath of the attack. She was initially discharged from hospital, before being readmitted for further treatment. The 16-year-old boy who was injured in the incident has since been released from hospital and allowed to return home.
This shocking event is yet another reminder of the hideous practice of acid attacks, which have escalated considerably in recent years in the UK. Figures released by the police have shown that there has been a 73% increase in such attacks between 2012 and 2017. As community leaders and politicians continue to condemn such incidents, attention remains focused on the need to reform sentencing guidelines for perpetrators of these types of crimes, ensuring that the public is properly protected against one of the most heinous forms of assault
