Ex-police officer under criminal investigation over Andy Malkinson case – IOPC


Four retired Greater Manchester Police officers are being investigated for their conduct in relation to the wrongful conviction of Andy Malkinson, who was exonerated last year after spending 17 years in jail. One former officer is being investigated for alleged perverting the course of justice and misconduct in public office. All four are also being investigated for alleged gross misconduct. The Independent Office for Police Conduct, which has taken over a review into GMP’s handling of complaints from Malkinson, is investigating whether officers followed appropriate processes in identifying him as a suspect and whether evidence was withheld at his trial. Catherine Bates, the IOPC Regional Director, said Malkinson was “a victim of one of the worst miscarriages of justice in British history”
