An inquest has opened to investigate the deaths of seven individuals who drowned when a yacht sank off the coast of Sicily due to bad weather. Prominent British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah were among the deceased. Although Lynch’s cause of death was determined to be drowning, the cause of Hannah’s death and that of Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife, Judy, 71, remain under investigation. Furthermore, Detective Superintendent Mike Brown of Suffolk Police disclosed that the cause of death of Mr and Mrs Bloomer remain under investigation, and all four deaths were recorded at 05:00 on 19 August, 2021.
The Bayesian, a 56m sailing vessel, had 10 passengers and 12 crew on board when it sank. Marilyn, Lynch’s wife, was one of fifteen people who managed to escape in a lifeboat, including a one-year-old infant. Miss Lynch’s body was the last to be retrieved from the water. Subsequently, divers searched to recover the other six bodies.
An Italian authority will lead in the investigation, and Suffolk Police will await information from them. The Bayesian sank rapidly for reasons not yet ascertained. Mr Lynch, a prolific figure in the UK tech industry, has recently been involved in a long-running legal dispute that led to his extradition to the US to face fraud charges, alongside his business partner, Stephen Chamberlain. Lynch was later cleared of all charges. On September 5, just a few days before Lynch’s death, Chamberlain died after being hit by a car while running. An inquest into Chamberlain’s death opened and adjourned in Cambridgeshire on the same day
