Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen: Caernarfon school axes dinners after mice found in kitchen

The discovery of mice in the kitchen at Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen in Caernarfon, Gwynedd has led to the school’s cooked dinners being suspended. Parents have been informed of the situation which was described by the headteacher as raising “concern for the health and safety of our pupils”. Instead, pupils have been provided with packed lunches until the issue has been fully addressed. The school is said to be working closely with the local authority to resolve the issue.

Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen is a bilingual secondary school of some 875 pupils aged between 11 and 18. The headteacher, Clive Thomas, assured parents in a letter that the situation was being treated very seriously and expressed gratitude for their understanding and support as the issue is dealt with.

The discovery comes as a further illustration of the wider ongoing problem of mice infestation in areas of the UK. Recently, it was revealed in The Independent that some 1.2 million incidents of rat and mice infestation had been recorded across England over the past five years. In October 2021, Rentokil reported a 140% rise in rat and mice sightings in London as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, in this case, the local authority and school are taking the problem seriously and will be working to establish and resolve the source of the issue quickly and safely in order to reintroduce cooked dinners as soon as possible
