UK forces involved in response to Iran attacks on Israel

UK forces were reportedly involved in providing support to Israel during the recent conflict in the Middle East after Iran launched a missile attack on the country. Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that British forces had “played their part in attempts to prevent further escalation,” but provided no further details. According to sources, British fighter jets were involved, as they were during a previous missile attack by Iran in April.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed support for Israel in the wake of the attacks, recognizing its right to defend itself. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for the missile attacks, which they said were in retaliation for recent attacks that killed leaders of the Hezbollah and Hamas militant groups, as well as a senior Iranian commander.

During a phone call with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu, Sir Keir underscored the importance of a ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza. The UK Prime Minister also advised British nationals to leave Lebanon, warning that the situation was becoming “increasingly grave.”

The missile attacks came shortly after Israel launched a ground invasion in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah. Lebanese officials have reported that over 1,000 individuals have been killed following Israeli air strikes in recent weeks, with Hezbollah responding by firing hundreds of rockets into northern Israel. The conflict escalated on 8 October 2023, following an unprecedented attack on Israel by Hamas gunmen from the Gaza Strip
