Woman, 96, spared jail after causing deadly Formby crash


A 96-year-old woman has received a suspended prison sentence for killing a fellow member of her bridge club in a car accident. June Mills drove her Vauxhall Corsa into Brenda Joyce, 76, while accelerating too hard in Formby, Merseyside, on August 2, 2023. Mills also injured Joyce’s friend, Jennifer Ensor, 80. She could not explain the reason for the acceleration. The prosecution charged her with causing death by dangerous driving, which she admitted.

Mills is banned from driving for five years and has received a suspended sentence of 18 months. Judge Simon Medland said it would benefit nobody to imprison her, describing the case as an “utter tragedy”. Mills had driven for 65 years at the time of the accident, but the court was told her vehicle was in good condition.
