'Love in the air' – 100 weddings in a day at Old Marylebone Town Hall

Old Marylebone Town Hall in London has become the stage for a major matrimonial event. The building, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, saw 100 couples gather together to legalise their relationships and renew their vows. For a fee of £100, the celebrants were able to get married or enter into a civil partnership. The event began early in the morning and ran throughout the day, going well into the evening.

The BBC reports that one of the happy couples was that of journalist Thomas Mackintosh and his partner Paige. With temperatures hitting 30°C, however, the event was not without its challenges. Speaking to the broadcaster, Mackintosh said the heat had added “an extra layer of love and sweat” to proceedings. But it did not keep the couples away, with all 100 slots booked in advance.

Old Marylebone Town Hall has proven a popular venue for weddings, with over 3,000 couples tying the knot there each year. The event somewhat mirrors the “Summer of Love” which took place in San Francisco in 1967. That year, until it was terminated in October, over 100,000 young people from across the USA congregated in the city to celebrate love, peace and cultural diversity.

It seems that the romantic couples of London were united in their enthusiasm for the occasion. Love knows no bounds, it seems, and even scorching temperatures couldn’t put a damper on this truly joyous event
