The Met Office has issued a warning for heavy rain along parts of southeastern England. A yellow warning has been put into effect starting at 4 PM BST on Sunday and lasting until 9 AM on Monday. The warning pertains to East Sussex, West Sussex, and certain parts of southern Surrey. Flooding, power cuts, and disrupted travel could all occur due to the heavy rain.
It is predicted that between 20-30mm of rain could fall over a period of nine to twelve hours in many parts of the warning area. In some areas, up to 50-80mm of rain could fall. Certain areas have already seen more than 250% of their average rainfall for September. Wind gusts of up to 50-55mph are likely, increasing to as high as 60mph in areas with higher ground and coasts.
The Met Office spokesman warned that homes and businesses could be at risk of flooding and that power supplies and other services may be interrupted. Bus and train services are also likely to be affected. While Monday’s rainfall could extend into Tuesday in some eastern and southeastern areas, it should become somewhat drier and brighter more broadly around mid-week. However, there are indicators that further wet and windy weather could be on the horizon towards the end of next week.
Individuals are urged to monitor the forecast and heed any flood warnings that may be issued in their area. As always, it is best to stay indoors and avoid any travel if possible during times of heavy rain
