Two 13-year-old boys who killed a 19-year-old man with a machete in Wolverhampton will serve a minimum of eight years and six months in custody. The boys, who cannot be named, were 12 at the time of the murder and are the youngest convicted killers since Robert Thompson and Jon Venables killed two-year-old James Bulger in 1993. Under the legal equivalent of a life sentence for a juvenile, the boys will remain on licence for the rest of their lives and will be monitored closely. If they make good progress, they could be released when they turn twenty.
The boys have been detained at His Majesty’s Pleasure and will stay in youth detention accommodation. However, if they are considered a risk to the public, they may never come out of prison.
