Rochdale 'freaked out' by arrival of giant baby puppet


Residents of Rochdale were left feeling uneasy after a giant baby puppet was erected in the town center. The puppet, named Lilly, was commissioned for a council project aimed at getting children to discuss the environment. Conversations between school children and the giant baby were recorded and will be played back to the public when the puppet is relocated from the town center to a nature park next month. However, many residents have been left feeling unsettled by the large figure, with some branding it “creepy”.

The giant baby stands at an impressive 8.5 meters tall and has been fashioned with a dummy in its hand and a large purple bottle at its feet. Members of the public described the puppet as “freaky” and “the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen”. One person likened the figure to something out of a sci-fi movie from the 90s. Another passerby even asked if there was someone inside.

Despite the slightly negative reception from some members of the public, the baby puppet was still able to fulfill its purpose of getting children to think more about the environment. School children were invited to speak to the puppet about their plans for caring for nature, and these conversations will be shared as part of the Wild Wanders event in October – an annual outdoor environmental arts festival.

Rochdale Council shared that the idea for the giant baby puppet came about as a way of getting children to talk more about the environment in a fun, interactive way. The puppet is certainly interactive, but it remains to be seen whether the large baby will make another appearance in the future. As for residents of Rochdale, they may be hoping for something slightly less unsettling
