Prince Charles issued a call to end environmental destruction and make peace with nature, saying that we are living at odds with the natural world. In a video message played at a Campaign for Nature event at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Prince Charles said that the planet is buckling under the pressure of our actions. Prince William echoed his father’s concerns and said that climate changes and the extinction of a million species were the most pressing “existential threat” to our world.
The Prince emphasized that urgent action was needed to keep the planet liveable for future generations. This would require a reset of our relationship with the natural world, involving economic changes that realigned financial flows from destruction to regeneration. International leaders need to halt unsustainable production and consumption of natural resources. Prince William also called for the protection of rivers, oceans, savannas, mangroves, and forests, as well as the communities that protect and live alongside them.
The Earthshot awards for international ideas to improve sustainability were also announced at the event. The finalists were chosen from over 2,500 nominations and recognized innovative ways of protecting the environment. The five winners will receive £1m each and will be announced at an event in Cape Town, South Africa, in November. The projects include solar-powered refrigeration in Kenya, earthquake-resilient bricks in Nepal, building a social enterprise around farming seaweed in the Philippines, and a scheme in Kazakhstan to protect a type of antelope on the brink of extinction.
