Newspaper headlines: PM braces for 'storm' and Britons told leave Lebanon


Front pages of UK newspapers on Wednesday are reflecting on the keynote speech delivered by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at the Labour Party conference. According to The Times, the PM made a three-pronged pledge: “To face the storm, to unite the country, and to rebuild it,” in an attempt to refocus government attention away from recent controversies and towards key policy areas. Among these policies was a promise to house all military veterans, young care leavers, and victims of domestic abuse. The on-stage kiss between Sir Keir and his wife, Victoria, received widespread coverage as well.

The Telegraph reported that Sir Keir peppered his 54-minute address with variations of the popular Brexit slogan, promising to take back “control” of major areas like the NHS and education. The speech was an apparent attempt to connect with voters who may have been turned off by ideological debates in the party, rather than traditional electoral issues.

The Financial Times led with a warning about the “stark choices” ahead for the UK, in the wake of the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. The paper also featured a report on China’s “aggressive” new growth measures, as well as on HSBC and JP Morgan’s role in transferring funds for a company run by a late Russian mercenary leader.

Other papers covered topics ranging from the potential evacuation of British nationals from Lebanon by the Ministry of Defence to the EU’s willingness to shorten the time the UK government will need to allow under-30s to remain in the country as part of a broader agreement on security and trade.
