Young ecologist on beauty of London's wild spaces

Akash Barua, a 24-year-old ecologist from Peckham, has garnered attention on social media for his efforts to raise awareness about the varied wildlife residing in London. Barua, who developed a fascination with nature during visits to family in Scotland, began exploring wildlife in the city and soon began creating videos for social media in his free time. These videos include an Instagram series called “Wild Endz” which delves into the beavers of Ealing and the sparrows and parakeets of Peckham.

Although typically working as a graduate ecologist conducting bat surveys at night, Barua’s side project has gained a following online, highlighting the overlooked but thriving ecologies within the capital. While wildlife is often associated with rural settings, Barua’s videos emphasise that London has a rich and varied environment worth exploring.

Barua’s efforts have led to a rise in interest in London’s green spaces and the ecosystems that exist within them. Following the success of his videos, he continues to encourage city dwellers to explore the life right on their doorstep. By exploring and documenting the wildlife in London, Barua hopes to inspire a new generation of conservationists to cherish and protect these overlooked, urban habitats.

The popularity of Barua’s videos have only enhanced awareness of the importance of preserving biodiversity in London, with individuals from all across the city taking an interest in the local wildlife. His passion and enthusiasm for nature have also served as an inspiration to young people looking to get involved in conservation work and reveal the wealth of wildlife in their own communities
