Secret hate letters turn Shiptonthorpe village to 'poison'

Residents of Shiptonthorpe, a quiet village in East Yorkshire, are receiving anonymous hate letters that have turned the community into a “village of poison,” according to reports. The letters, which are said to be “vulgar, personal, obscene, and targeted,” have been terrorizing residents for the past two years. Humberside Police is investigating some of the incidents, which have been described as reminiscent of the scandalous letters that blighted Littlehampton in Sussex in the spring of 1920.

One resident, Sophie, who says she received her first letter in December 2022, recalls being “astonished” at its contents, describing it as “vile” and “accusing me of what you could call being a loose woman.” The letter also said that the only way she could succeed in politics was to perform unspeakable acts on men. Sophie has since received three more letters and has reported all of them to the police. Her partner Sam also received letters, one of which urged him to stop Sophie “from roaming.”
