£25.49The teenager who stabbed a man to death in Nuneaton has been sentenced to at least 13 years in prison. The youth, who is now 17 but was 16 at the time of the attack, was caught on CCTV as he approached Tom Ellis, a keen sportsman, and stabbed him in the chest with a large hunting-style knife. Ellis had been out celebrating his 25th birthday with his girlfriend and others on 8 June 2018.
During the trial, it emerged that the teenager regularly carried knives. Warwick Crown Court heard that the defendant and other youths were involved in a brief verbal exchange before the attack occurred. Following the stabbing, the youth ordered a takeaway and asked his mother to collect it before the police arrived.
Prosecutor Peter Grieves-Smith described the teenager as “volatile and out-of-control”. Judge Andrew Lockhart KC noted how the attack had affected so many people, saying that Ellis “didn’t know that you had that knife ready for use”. The judge also highlighted that Tom’s death was witnessed by his loved ones in a public place. The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will serve a minimum of 13 years.

The government has introduced measures to try to tackle the problem, including tougher sentences for those found carrying knives and a new Offensive Weapons Act. However, critics argue more needs to be done to address the root causes of knife crime, such as poverty and social inequality
