Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World officials have announced that Cinnamon, the capybara that went missing several days ago, has been found. The zoo reported that the giant rodent had escaped from her enclosure on September 13 and made her way into nearby woodland. Late Friday afternoon saw her discovery in a pond situated in the zoo’s conservation area. The team then managed to catch her and return her to her enclosure.
“We’re absolutely delighted to have Cinnamon back at the zoo,” said owner Will Dorrell. “I’d love to say it was nice and easy getting her out of the pond, but it wasn’t. Several of us got very wet. Cinnamon was quite happy in the pond, so we had to get in with her and slowly try to coax her into the cage. I know that there will be lots of people who will be very excited to see her, but nobody more so than her own mum and dad.”
Due to the capybara’s exciting escape, the public reaction has astounded the team and they are grateful to everyone who helped ensure the safe return of Cinnamon. Teams worked for around an hour to free the capybara from the pond and into its cage since Cinnamon seemed to be comfortable in her new surroundings.
The animal seems to be in good health, but will require a thorough check-up from a vet in the coming days. Meanwhile, wildlife experts will be monitoring Cinnamon around the clock, and the animal will remain off-limits to the public over the weekend. Her return to the family paddock with her twin brother is expected next week.
Keepers had attempted to lure Cinnamon with live traps, but the capybara managed to avoid them. In addition, the dense thicket and brambles in the area made it nearly impossible for volunteers to search for the animal. Air support was brought in, as thermal-drones searched along the area that was logged by the teams on foot, but the capybara remained elusive until this afternoon. The capybara, the largest living rodent in the world, is a native species to South America
