Scotland experienced unusually high temperatures in September, with some parts of the country seeing temperatures above 25C. Kinlochewe in Wester Ross was the hottest location in the country last Wednesday with a temperature of 25.2C, which is similar to the temperature in Valencia, Spain. Aviemore also saw highs of 25C, with Altnaharra in Sutherland and Glasgow reaching 24C and 23C respectively.
These high temperatures were not limited to Wednesday, as on Tuesday, the temperature in Kirkwall in Orkney was 21.4C, the highest it had been on the islands at this time of the year since 1998. Additionally, Wick in Caithness experienced a temperature of 22.3C, which is a seasonal high, according to records dating back to 1930.
These temperatures are a stark contrast to the weather seen last week when arctic air brought September snow to some of Scotland’s highest mountains. Despite this, the Met Office has stated that last month in Scotland was cooler than the average September. Western Scotland saw a particularly wet August, with it being provisionally designated as the third wettest August on record for the region.
While these high temperatures might come as a surprise, they are not entirely unprecedented. In 2019, September temperatures in Scotland topped 28C, making it one of the hottest ever recorded. That being said, it is always unusual to see high temperatures at this time of the year, and it remains to be seen whether this will continue or if the weather will return to more typical autumn conditions
