Brie Larson 'excited' for West End debut in Greek tragedy Elektra

In a surprising move, Brie Larson, the Academy Award-winning actress famous for her roles in Room and Captain Marvel, has announced that she will make her debut on the UK stage in 2025. Larson will perform the part of Elektra in an adaptation of the famous Greek tragedy by Sophocles. The play has been translated by poet Anne Carson and will be directed by Daniel Fish.

Larson, who has not performed on stage since playing Emily in Our Town in Massachusetts in 2010, expressed excitement at collaborating with Fish and Carson, describing the drama as a “timeless story.” The play tells the tale of Elektra, a young woman grappling with grief following her father’s assassination. She teams up with her long lost brother, Orestes, as they try to exact vengeance on those who murdered their father.

Elektra will premiere in January 2025 at the Theatre Royal in Brighton, before moving to the West End. The show is expected to run for an 11-week period after Brighton, a move that’s being backed by Empire Street Productions, the team behind Slave Play and The Pillowman.

Fish said working on the Sophocles’ tragedy was a “thrilling challenge” and Carson’s translation “explodes the question of what is ancient and what is contemporary.” When asked about the performance, Larson remarked that storytelling had always helped her to organise life, feelings and experiences, and she looked forward to sharing that experience with the West End audience.

It goes without saying that this event is highly anticipated, given that it is the first time Larson will be performing in the UK theatre scene. As such, Elektra is likely to create a buzz in the theatre world, and many fans, including those who may not have seen the actress perform live, are eager to see her take on the role of Elektra
