The public inquiry into the murders committed by Lucy Letby at the Countess of Chester Hospital has heard from the mother of one of the victims, known as Baby C. She said that she was lied to by a medical director who failed to mention that suspicions had been raised about Letby, who was standing by her son’s monitor when he suffered a cardiac arrest. Letby had been convicted of injecting air into the child’s stomach. However, a subsequent investigation into the child’s death had not mentioned any suspicion about the nurse.
The meeting with the medical director took place in February 2017, during which he told Baby C’s mother that a post-mortem examination had revealed nothing untoward about the death of her baby. The mother said that she felt that they were being kept in the dark about what had happened to her child and that they were given no information until later. She described it as devastating and that the grief will be life-long.
The mother stated that she was horrified when she found out that she had been lied to. She said she lost all faith in the hospital and felt like she was banging her head against a brick wall. She had received no prior information until the police called her, informing her of Letby’s arrest.
The former hospital managers have accepted that the senior managers’ contact with the affected parents and the investigation into the situation was inadequate and has caused hurt and anxiety to those affected. The senior managers expressed their deep regret for their actions and decisions, and the inquiry will continue to unfold as it should.
Letby is currently serving 15 whole-life prison terms for murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others between June 2015 and June 2016
