A birthday meal took an unexpected turn for one woman when her partner discovered a pearl in one of the mussels they were eating. Paige Hawkins said she was “really shocked” by the discovery and felt like it was a “little gift” for her birthday. Hawkins hopes to put the pearl in her necklace as a keepsake.
The mussel was served at the Quayside seafood restaurant in Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire, and is the restaurant’s first and only natural pearl find. While rare, this occurrence is estimated to happen once in every 10,000 mussels.
Scott Applegarth, co-owner of the Quayside, was surprised at the find and said, “We’re selling 25kg of mussels a week… In the whole history of the business, we’ve never encountered one.” Applegarth suggested the find proves what “our native waters can produce.”
The Quayside, which opened in 2020, has already gained attention for its unique seafood dining experience. The Quayside also released a statement commending Hawkins on her find and expressed gratitude for her sharing the story. Considering the rarity of this type of find, it’s not hard to see why the story has created buzz online and will likely attract new customers to Quayside in the future
