In a rather strange turn of events, Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue received calls for two rescue cases that were quite unique. The group went to the aid of a baby otter trapped in a car engine in Wragby, Lincolnshire, and also helped a family from Grimsby who found a fox sleeping in their living room. Aaron Goss, the lead rescuer at the group, referred to Thursday evening as “the strangest start to the weekend we’ve ever had”.
The rescue team had to put in quite a bit of effort to free the otter, who was too young to be separated from its mother, from the engine with the help of a large deer net. The animal, who has been named Oakley, has been transferred to RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, for rehabilitation. Mr. Goss stated that finding an otter in an engine was not something they had come across before; squirrels were the most likely animals to be found in that location.
The fox, on the other hand, had not been fed by the family but had been sleeping behind a cabinet in their living room. The family was not aware of the fox’s presence until they heard breathing sounds emanating from behind the cabinet. After being safely trapped, the fox, named Duke, was transported to a wildlife sanctuary to be treated for mange. Mr. Goss said that it was “an odd case,” but fortunately, it was just a mistake by the fox. It will enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet and will be released soon.
The rescuer added that they don’t usually come across super unique cases such as these, let alone two in a single day. However, they are ready for most things. Hopefully, the dedicated volunteers had an exciting day out!
