Lin-Manuel Miranda calls Welsh 'beautifully musical' language


Even though Lin-Manuel Miranda thinks Welsh is “one of the most beautifully musical languages ever,” he doubts that Disney is ready to produce an animated film using a Welsh theme. He acknowledges that since the release of the 2012 movie Brave, which is set in Scotland and produced by Disney, they have not created any movies focused on Welsh culture.

Miranda, known for his success with the musical Hamilton, spent time in Wales while filming the BBC drama His Dark Materials in 2018, where he found himself falling in love with the Welsh castles and cuisine. He revealed that his London friends were not excited about his trip to Cardiff, being a bit snobby about the Welsh capital, but he felt his visit was a success and is looking forward to returning.

The entertainer and his family embraced the Welsh lifestyle, with videos of Miranda singing in a Cardiff bar where he went for musical theatre karaoke going viral. He did not expect the footage to make the news, but it did and helped shed light on the fun lifestyle in Wales.

Miranda enjoyed Hay-on-Wye, saying it was a “haven” for ice cream shops and bookshops, being one of his favorite places to visit with his family. In November, Hamilton is set to visit the Wales Millennium Centre during its first UK tour, and Miranda is thrilled about the prospect. The production was groundbreaking, with its inclusive casting of actors with different ethnic and racial backgrounds portraying America’s founding fathers, challenging previous portrayals based on tradition.

Miranda claims that he was not imagining traditional likelihoods when casting the musical’s roles, but the best hip-hop artists to fit those roles. He hopes that the Hamilton show will be an excuse for him to return to Wales since he enjoyed his time there so thoroughly
