Following the burglary of Southwark Foodbank in London, the Prince and Princess of Wales have made a charitable donation to replenish the stock of food and hygiene products, worth £3,000, that were stolen. The foodbank thanked the royal couple and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community. The food stocks of the foodbank have since been replenished. The burglary had a devastating impact on the community and vulnerable people, according to Pecan CEO Peter Edwards.
This is not the first incidence of burglaries targeting food banks in London. Lewisham Foodbank also experienced a similar theft where a large number of cash donations meant for food were stolen. Over the past 14 months London has seen a total of four food banks targeted in this way. Meanwhile, members of the public have rallied to the aid of those impacted by the burglaries by donating large sums.
In response to the burglary, Kensington Palace released a statement saying that the incident had been brought to the attention of Catherine and Prince William, who had also made a donation to Southwark Foodbank. They generously pledged £3,500 to help replace the stolen goods and bring some much-needed relief to the local community.
As of yet, the Metropolitan Police service has not made any arrests related to the food bank burglaries. Despite having enough resources to continue serving those in need, it is crucial that food banks receive sufficient donations in order to maintain the essential role they play within the London community
