PC Craig Carter, a former Metropolitan Police officer from Harlow, Essex, has been sentenced to 16 months in jail for stealing around £115 from the wallet of Italian filmmaker and actor Claudio Gaetani, who had collapsed and died while on his way to visit friends in north London in September 2020. While on duty, Carter had been sent to collect Gaetani’s personal items and took the money from his wallet. Carter pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office and was sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court.
Judge Kalyani Kaul KC described Carter’s 23-year career as a police officer and his personal life, stating that he had raised two daughters and had a “strong” marriage with his wife. The judge then said to Carter: “On the 7th of September, two years ago, you threw all of that away.” She added that Gaetani was in the most vulnerable position any human being could be in, and his crime was abhorrent, stating he had let down his entire community.
