At the National Television Awards, the cast of the popular ITV drama Mr Bates vs the Post Office showed their appreciation for the real-life figures who inspired the show. Mr Bates vs the Post Office focuses on the true story of the Post Office Horizon IT scandal, which resulted in the wrongful accusations and prosecution of dozens of sub-postmasters.
The widely-celebrated show won three awards at the ceremony – New Drama, Drama Performance and Impact. As a former sub-postmaster, Jo Hamilton took to the stage to speak out about the lack of support that she and her fellow sub-postmasters have received, commenting that there had been “no change” in their situation since the Labour government took power.
Sadly, Hamilton reported that “almost all” of her fellow sub-postmasters at the awards ceremony had not received full compensation for the losses they incurred due to the scandal. The Labour government has responded to these claims by launching a new independent appeals process that aims to provide better support for sub-postmasters affected by the Horizon IT scandal.
With Mr Bates vs the Post Office winning multiple awards and bringing much-needed attention to the injustice that sub-postmasters faced, it is hoped that more will be done to rectify the scandal and ensure that those affected are justly compensated for their losses
