Salmond and Sturgeon on breakdown of political partnership

The relationship between former First Minister Alex Salmond and his successor Nicola Sturgeon has been discussed in a new BBC documentary series. During the two-part program, Salmond said that he “seriously doubts” the two will ever be on speaking terms again due to the breakdown of their long-term political partnership. The series, titled “Salmond and Sturgeon: A Troubled Union,” will air on the BBC Scotland channel and BBC iPlayer.

The documentary features interviews with both Salmond and Sturgeon as they reflect on their time working together. Salmond served as First Minister of Scotland from 2007 to 2014, when he was succeeded by Sturgeon. The two were previously close colleagues who had worked together for over 20 years, but their relationship deteriorated over the years, particularly after Salmond resigned from the Scottish National Party (SNP) following allegations of sexual harassment.

The documentary also looks back at some of the key moments in the Scottish political landscape during Salmond’s time as First Minister. These include the 2014 independence referendum, in which Scotland voted to remain part of the United Kingdom, and the SNP’s historic victory in the 2015 general election.

Despite their acrimonious split, both Salmond and Sturgeon have remained prominent figures in Scottish politics. Salmond was recently acquitted on charges of sexual assault, while Sturgeon continues to lead the SNP and has called for a second referendum on Scottish independence.

The documentary is produced by Firecrest Films for BBC Scotland and offers an inside look at one of the most compelling political partnerships in recent history. It is set to air on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, and will give viewers an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of two of Scotland’s most high-profile politicians
