Following Princess Catherine’s announcement that she had finished her chemotherapy treatment, the Prince of Wales made his first public appearance. He travelled solo to Llanelli to celebrate Welsh culture and sport, beginning at Ysgol Gynradd Swiss Valley, where he met pupils who had participated in this year’s Urdd Eisteddfod. Among them was 10-year-old Ruby Davies, who went viral earlier this year with her enthusiastic celebrations after winning a recital category.
“I’ve watched your video a few times Ruby,” said Prince William, upon meeting Ruby. “It was very impressive, you’re going to have to teach me how to speak Welsh.” When asked how it felt to meet the Prince of Wales, Ruby said it was “amazing.” Her mother Lynne expressed her joy at hearing that Princess Catherine had completed chemotherapy, saying it was something that affected many people.
The school’s head teacher, Jo Davies, said everyone had embraced the visit, with the children being very excited and some staff members being shocked that the Prince of Wales would come. Prince William also greeted a crowd outside the school where several people offered their well wishes to Princess Catherine. He thanked them and accepted two cards.
The prince was also serenaded with Welsh songs and visited the headquarters of the Wales Air Ambulance, of which he is a patron. Ex-pupil Kate Davies and her mother Elizabeth Davies were thrilled about the royal visit. “We said ‘bore da’ to him, and he answered us back in Welsh,” said Elizabeth. Cameron Churchill, who lives close to the school, said it was “unbelievable” to see the future king in his area and that he’d give him a five out of five for his Welsh pronunciation
