As temperatures drop this week, many parts of England and Wales are experiencing a shift from the recent thunderstorms and flash flooding. According to meteorologists, air is expected to come in from the Arctic, causing temperatures to be around four to seven Celsius below average starting mid-week. Additionally, it will be cold enough in the Scottish mountains for some wintry showers. Some sources have suggested the arrival of an “Arctic blast”. While the Arctic origins of the air are accurate, it is thought that the term “blast” is a bit dramatic, and more suited for much colder air expected during winter. However, there is no doubt that the change in temperature will be noticeable.
Between Tuesday and the end of the week, a strong north-westerly wind will bring colder air from the Arctic across the United Kingdom. As a result of the wind, temperatures will fall below average with daytime maximums of nine to 14C. The wind is expected to make it feel even colder than the temperature suggests, and showers will be moving in across northern and western areas of the UK. These showers will be heavy and thundery with hail, with some of them wintry enough over the highest ground of Scotland.
It is not uncommon to experience snow over the Scottish mountains during the month of September as we head towards the colder winter months. Our nights are also likely to get rather chilly with temperatures predicted to drop down to 3-6C on Thursday night. However, by Friday and into the weekend, the wind will change direction to a south-westerly, which tends to bring in more seasonally average temperatures around 16 to 20C for mid-September.
September has seen a significant amount of rainfall for some parts of the United Kingdom. Over the past few days, parts of England and Wales have already had over a month’s worth of rain, with some experiencing flash flooding and disruptions. Shawbury in Shropshire, for instance, has had one and a half times its average September rainfall since the start of the month. Despite the recent wet weather, the week ahead is predicted to be unsettled, with more showers expected, and thunderstorms possible with hail. However, it is likely to turn a little drier by Thursday before more persistent rain spreads in late on Friday
