Five inmates including a British national have escaped from a high-security prison in Portugal. Mark Cameron Roscaleer broke out of Vale de Judeus jail along with two Portuguese men, an Argentinian, and a Georgian. These prisoners had scaled the wall with a ladder and had received “external help”, according to Reuters news agency. Portuguese police have reportedly asked for international cooperation to capture the five inmates. Portugal’s national union for prison guards confirmed on social media that these inmates are extremely dangerous and the public should not approach them.
Roscaleer is serving a nine-year prison sentence for kidnap and robbery, according to Portuguese media reports. The two Portuguese escapees were serving 25-year sentences for offences including drug trafficking, criminal association, theft, robbery, and kidnapping, Portugal’s prison service told Reuters. Vale de Judeus is a high-security prison providing accommodation to 560 inmates, according to its website. The escape took place on Saturday morning, according to the prison service.
Frederico Morais, the head of Portuguese national union for prison guards, said that the prison was unsupported with lack of prison guards; therefore, the surveillance towers were not manned. Portuguese news site Diario de Noticias reported that the head of Portugal’s national prison guards said the escape occurred due to lack of prison guards which made the surveillance towers unmanned. The authorities have requested international cooperation to recapture the five inmates who are extremely dangerous.
The UK Foreign Office has been contacted by BBC regarding the incident. The Portuguese police have intensified their search for these criminals and are hunting them internationally. Portugese police have shared photographs of the escaped prisoners with the Interpol and law enforcement agencies of other countries to seek their assistance in catching the escaped prisoners
