The United Kingdom has announced that it will supply Ukraine with six hundred and fifty short-range missiles to strengthen its defenses against Russia. The US has also pledged its support with new supplies of longer-range missiles, anti-tank weapons, and artillery shells. The UK’s Ministry of Defence has disclosed that it will send Lightweight Multirole Missiles to Ukraine to thwart missile and drone attacks. The first deliveries are expected to arrive by the end of 2024.
Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has called on Western countries to deliver more air defense systems following a series of Russian attacks on cities such as Poltava and Kharkiv. After Congress approved a $61bn military aid package in April, the US government ramped up its supplies of arms to Ukraine. Before that, its arms supplies had dried up for several months. Western countries have sent Ukraine over 620 artillery guns, according to the Kiel Institute. They have also given the nation 82 missile systems, including Himars and the M270 multiple launch rocket system. Drones have also been used extensively in the war for surveillance, targeting, launching missiles, and as kamikaze weapons, making Ukraine’s request for air defense systems critical.

Germany has, however, revealed that it plans to reduce its planned military support to Ukraine in 2025 by nearly half. To counter Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s cities and infrastructure, Western nations have sent various air defense systems, ranging from the UK’s short-range anti-aircraft weapon, Starstreak, to the Patriot missile system. Despite the provision of substantial military aid, Western nations’ backing has not yet enabled Ukraine to make a significant breakthrough in the conflict
