Staines: Police treating deaths of children as murder

The authorities have confirmed that they are investigating the deaths of three children found dead alongside their father in a house in Surrey as a murder case. The victims, identified as Dominik Swiderski, aged three, and his two-year-old brothers Nikodem and Kacper, were discovered in Staines on Saturday by emergency services. The father, Piotr Swiderski, a 31-year-old Polish national, was also found deceased on the premises. Surrey Police have stated that they are not currently seeking anyone else in connection with the investigation.

The news comes after the deaths of the children and their father were referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to prior contact between the family and the police. The IOPC determined that an investigation into the previous contact, which occurred in August 2023 and related to concerns about a man’s mental health, was not required.

The inquests into the deaths of the four individuals are scheduled to take place next week. Surrey Police have also stated that post-mortems will be conducted in due course. The mother of the children, identified as Angelika Swiderska, has been receiving support from specialist officers. In a statement, she stated that Piotr was an “amazing husband and father” who loved his family deeply. She described her sons as “full of life and happiness” and always smiling, even in difficult circumstances.

Detective Constable Insp Kimball Edey expressed condolences on behalf of the force, stating: “I would like to express my sincere condolences to the family of Dominik, Kacper and Nikodem for their loss. They will continue to be supported by specialist officers as our investigation continues. I would ask that their privacy is respected at what is a tremendously difficult time for them.” The police were alerted to the incident by the ambulance service, who arrived at the house in Bremer Road on 4 September. Flowers have been left outside the property in memory of the victims
