Man charged over death of missing Khasha Smith


Khasha Smith, a 35-year-old mother-of-three, has been missing since October 2020, but her disappearance was not reported until January 5th. Police Scotland has charged John Byrne, 39, in connection with her death, although her body has not yet been found. Byrne is to appear at the Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, September 13th. Det Ch Insp Bob Williamson of Police Scotland has said that extensive inquiries are ongoing to trace Khasha and that it is “vital” to get answers to support her family.

Khasha Smith’s last known sighting was on a FaceTime call with a friend. Though no one had reported her missing for months, Police Scotland has not specified why there was no earlier investigation or search. Her disappearance has made national news in Scotland and sparked public concern and discussion of how missing persons cases are handled.

Khasha was from the Muirhouse/Craigentinny area of Edinburgh and was a mother to three young children. Her death, as yet unproven, has shocked her close community and touched a chord with many across Scotland. The public is still urged to come forward with any information that may be relevant to the investigation, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.
